THE REVEALER

Introdution

Revealer is a transforming single door system serving the purpose of a two-door system.

Two-Door System

The Door system as the name suggests has two doors in which the outer door is called a safety door and the other is called the main door.

The main door is closed only at night or when there is no one in the house. The safety door is always closed and it is used to interact with anyone who comes at the doorstep.

Advantages

The safety door is a grill structure to which the person inside can see and make conversation with the stranger outside without actually opening up the complete door making the situation quite safer.

Disadvantages

Required lot of space and prior planning before installing.

Objective

The main objective of the project was to engineer all the benefits of a two-door system in a single door system saving space and complexity of planning

Concept Development

To integrate Two-Door system in one, we need to make the door mechanically smart meaning we need to design the door such that it acts as a safety door when needed and vice versa. The following bi-threaded screw mechanism will help achieve this.

In Right-hand screw if we rotate the screw clockwise the screw moves into the plane

On rotating the screw the platform moves right or left according to the direction of rotation.

The Design Process

There were several iterations before reaching the final design. Below is first attempted which was unsuccessful. It had a belt drive mechanism to transfer movement and torque, as a result, the force required to open the flaps was too large. The large force resulted in gear box failure as shown in the image below.

The final design iteration which was successful was the 61st attempt. It had the rack and pinion mechanism with Teflon bushing and a gearbox ration of 1:16 so as to increase the applied torque.

Wood Work

As a Mechanical Engineer, I would love to make the revealer mechanism visible to the world but, it had too many downsides in terms of maintenance and aesthetics. In order to protect the mechanism and also to add aesthetic value to the door, wood cladding was done.

69 different individual hexagonal wooden pieces were precisely cut on CNC and then were assembled together.
